Between the Wheels by Rush
To live between a rock and a hard place
In between time
Cruising in prime time
Soaking up the cathode rays

To live between the wars in our time
Living in real time
Holding the good time
Holding on to yesterdays

[Chorus]

You know how that rabbit feels
Going under your speeding wheels
Bright images flashing by
Like windshields towards a fly
Frozen in the fatal climb
But the wheels of time
Just pass you by
Wheels can take you around
Wheels can cut you down
We can go from boom to bust
From dreams to a bowl of dust
We can fall from rockets’ red glare
Down to "Brother can you spare…"
Another war
Another wasteland
And another lost generation

It slips between your hands like water
This living in real time
A dizzying lifetime
Reeling by on celluloid

Struck between the eyes
By the big-time world
Walking uneasy streets
Hiding beneath the sheets
Got to try and fill the void

Canada Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) and Tall Goldenrod (Solidago altissima) are two of the more difficult species to sort out. In the photo, S.canadensis parts are all on the left. The stems have no hairs at the bottom; the leaves have sharp teeth; and the flowers are less then 3 mm long. For S altissima the stems are hairy from top to bottom; the leaves have small or no teeth; and the flowers are more than 3 mm long.

I have a good truck, a couple of weed eaters, and tools for basic maintenance.

US deficit spending is $1.4 trillion dollars, Bernanke is flooding banks with cash, interest rates are at record lows, mortgage rates are at record lows, and velocity of money is falling like a rock.

Excess Reserves

Of the $1.8 trillion Bernanke has added to base money supply since the start of the recession, nearly all of it is sitting parked at the Fed as excess reserves.

Interest Paid on Excess Reserves

As you can see, banks have parked close to $1.6 trillion with the Fed earning .25 percent annually. This is free money to the banks to the tune of $4,000,000,000 per year for doing nothing.

In short, banks would rather have $4 billion in free money at a measly .25 percent than make much more money by lending it out. This indicates two things:

Money Multiplier Theory is nonsense

Banks are still capital impaired and/or banks have no credit-worthy borrowers who wish to borrow money

If and when banks do start lending, it will not be because all those excess reserves have tempted them. Rather it will be because banks feel they have credit-worthy borrowers.

In the meantime, debt deflation rolls on, distorted of course by global central bank stimulus everywhere one looks, notably (the Fed, ECB, China, Bank of England) and coming up shortly, the Bank of Japan.

As I have stated before, competitive global currency debasement is a good environment for gold.

Let’s wrap this up with one final chart.

Total Credit Market

As you can see the total credit market is well over $50 trillion. Yet a large number of misguided souls believe printing $1.8 trillion of which $1.6 trillion is parked as excess reserves will cause hyperinflation.

It won’t. Hyperinflation is a political event, not a monetary one. Besides, the US has more gold than any other nation. For further discussion, please see Hyperinflation Nonsense in Multiple Places.

Yes, the US is going to have a “debt moment”, just as Europe is having one now and Japan will have soon enough. However, that moment may be quiet a long ways away (or not), but hyperinflation will not be the result when it happens.

In the media recently, the question is being asked: how it is that the wealthy are doing so well while the middle class is suffering in comparison? The usual villains named are outsourcing and the resulting decline of the manufacturing base. Blame also goes to NAFTA and the other trade agreements negotiated by the last three administrations.

But there is another and more fundamental reason why we have this dramatic disparity in income. If you remember Economics 101 in college and the topic about the relationship between commodities and money, you may have seen, as I did, this little formulation written on the blackboard: C-M-C vs. M-C-M. The lecture had to do with a healthy system vs. an unhealthy one. I even recall the professor using the terms ethical and unethical in this context.

In a C-M-C economy, money functions as it was intended as the medium of exchange between commodities, all kinds of raw materials, produce, manufactured goods and services. In this natural system, some of the money made and earned passes into the hands of workers and that money works its way around and through the economy, benefitting many people. In effect wages multiply in value.

In an M-C-M economy, on the other hand, money is perverted into a commodity and real commodities serve only as an artificial and unnatural medium of exchange. In other words, people use money to make more money. In these cases money does not work into the general economy for the general welfare but remains in the hands of the few, sometimes not even involving a commodity except in name only. Combine that arrangement with beneficial tax and loophole policies and the effect is multiplied and protected.

One caveat: some may recognize the M-C-M system as an expression for arbitrage, the business of buying and selling of money, usually with no commodities involved. Sometimes, arbitrage serves a useful purpose in keeping the prices of commodities in balance with different currencies, but in general those in arbitrage have little or no contact with real commodities. But there is still a danger as we have seen in arbitrage manipulation of markets.

The point here is to suggest that using money to make money with little relationship to commodity is an unhealthy practice because it bypasses the makers of products, most of whom are the Middle Class. The result is that workers are left out of the loop and there are no wages to work their magic in the economy as a whole.

Another answer given to the disparity between the rich and the middle class is the failure of so-called trickle down economics. But here again is a misunderstanding. In an M-C-M economy, there is nothing to trickle down because commodity is either not involved or only marginally involved. And if the wealthy choose not to invest in the creation of commodity, the flow of money dries up.

As my professor explained to us in that Econ 101 class, he acquired knowledge and experience to sell to an institution which paid him a salary so that he could offer courses that students were willing to buy in order to acquire knowledge and experience. It was C-M-C working in good order. It worked for me for forty years in education and can work again.

This patch also adage Japan alteration from being a feudal bund to having a retail numizmatyka Kraków thriftiness and left the Japanese with a lingering Western influence.

But after Visentin gave up four goals on 17 shots and Wedgewood stopped all 10 shots he faced before the Swedes scored an empty-net goal, questions arose over which goalie was the most ready for the tournament.

Hay did say he plans to play both goalies in the tournament. That’s not unusual.

The backup often gets a game in the preliminary round against the weaker country promoted from the second-tier world championship, which would be Thursday’s game against Denmark.

“Both goalies feel, at least I feel that way right now, is that both goalies feel there’s confidence coming from me to them,” Hay said. “No matter who we play, no matter what time of the game it is, or against whoever, I think the goalies should have a lot of confidence.”

The U.S. meets Denmark in the later Pool A game in Edmonton. Latvia and Sweden open Pool B games in Calgary on Monday afternoon, followed by defending champion Russia versus Switzerland at night.

The top team in each pool earns byes to the semifinals. The second and third seeds cross over to meet in the quarter-finals.

Canada has won a medal in this tournament 13 straight years, including five gold from 2005 to 2009, and has played in the final every year for the last decade. Canada took silver the last two years.

Securing the bye to the semifinals provides rest and an extra day of preparation to the countries who earn them, but in recent tournaments, the bye hasn’t been that much of an advantage.

Three of the last four winners have come through a quarter-final — Canada in 2008, the U.S. in 2010 and Russia in 2011.

Canada opens against the Finns after beating them 3-1 in an exhibition game Dec. 19. Finland played hard in that game despite having just recently arrived in Canada.

“We were in that game,” Finnish coach Raimo Helminen said. “I don’t know if we can be better but I hope so (that) we can compete against the big favourite.”

Helminen, too, was secretive on the subject of his starting goalie. Chris Gibson, who plays for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Chicoutimi Sagueneens, was outstanding his two periods of the exhibition game against Canada.

Sam Aittokallio played the last period and the Colorado Avalanche prospect has the experience of playing one game in the tournament in Buffalo.

The Finns last won this tournament in 1998 and are looking for a bounce-back year after finishing sixth in Buffalo. They have six returning players, as well as a player who is considered the best one outside the NHL this season in Mikael Granlund.

The first-round pick (ninth overall) of the Minnesota Wild is a player Canada must pay attention to, says Hay.

“The Granlund line is a very talented line,” Hay said. “They’re very explosive and they’re the key I feel to their team and we have to make sure we limit their offensive opportunities.”

Canada went 2-1 in pre-tournament play. Visentin of the Niagara IceDogs made 22 saves in the exhibition games versus the Finns. The first-round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes is more conservative in his movements in net than the acrobatic Wedgewood.

Visentin was handed the starting job for the medal round in Buffalo and backstopped Canada to wins in the quarter-final and semifinal. Canada was leading 3-0 heading into the third period of the gold-medal game, but Russia scored five unanswered goals on Visentin to take the title.

He’s never shirked from addressing his role in the collapse. The maturity and experience he gained through that experience is considered valuable to Canada’s chances in this tournament.

“My mentality is the same as the team’s,” Visentin said Sunday. “We want to get better each and every day and once the tournament starts we need to bring our ‘A’ game every day so that’s what I’m going to do.”

Wedgwood, who plays for the Plymouth Whalers, stopped 24 of 25 shots in Canada’s 7-1 victory over Switzerland on Thursday. The third-round pick of the New Jersey Devils was a standout in selection camp.

“The coaches are going to make a decision they feel comfortable with and as a goalie you’ve got to deal with it,” Wedgewood said. “When you get your opportunity, take it.”

The Canadian team spent Christmas Eve at the home of Edmonton Oilers president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe and then received Christmas gifts from Hockey Canada back at their hotel.

“The last week has been fun, we worked on a lot, I think we got a lot better and we became closer as a team, but the tournament is finally here and the atmosphere is going to be great,” Canadian captain Jaden Schwartz said. “Finland is going to be a first tough contest for us so we’re real excited.”

We will issue a series of posts in the coming days that will look back at some of the major programs that helped struggling families during the year — their goals, impact and issues facing policymakers in 2012. Today, we’ll begin by setting the context.

For America’s low and moderate-income families, 2011 was another very bad year, as the Great Recession of 2007-2009 continued to have a large and lingering impact. Unemployment and long-term unemployment remained very high, as did the percentage Americans without health insurance.

Yet things aren’t nearly as bad as they could have been. The safety net is helping to hold the line against poverty and hardship, as the latest available figures in several areas show.

Without government assistance programs, the poverty rate would have been nearly twice as high in 2010: An estimated 28.6 percent, compared with the actual figure of 15.5 percent, based on a measure of poverty that includes the impact of programs like food stamps and housing assistance and tax credits (including the Earned Income Tax Credit). If the safety net hadn’t existed, another 40 million people would have been poor.

Just one part of the safety net — six temporary federal initiatives enacted in 2009 and 2010 to bolster the economy by lifting consumers’ incomes and purchases — kept an estimated 7 million people out of poverty in 2010.

The number of young adults with private health coverage has risen by roughly 2.5 million since an Affordable Care Act provision took effect last year requiring insurance companies to allow young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance plans through age 26.

Up to 2 million more people are employed in the fourth quarter of 2011 because of the 2009 Recovery Act, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The law’s impact on employment peaked in the third quarter of 2010, when as many as 3.6 million people owed their jobs to the Recovery Act; large parts of that Act have since expired.

These silver linings come with a big cloud, however. The temporary initiatives either have expired or are set to expire, and the Budget Control Act enacted in August calls for roughly $2 trillion in spending reductions; some in Congress want to cut even deeper.

All major deficit-reduction agreements of the past 25 years have reflected the principle that deficit reduction should not increase poverty or inequality. Upholding that bipartisan principle should be a top New Year’s resolution for policymakers in 2012.

The next post in this series will look at Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
